Goldenrod Animal Lancets

The GoldenRod Animal Lancet enables rapid, minimally invasive blood sampling from small animals, allowing multiple collections within the same day without causing lasting harm. This sterile, disposable lancet is designed for fast, easy use and helps maintain consistent sample volumes while reducing stress and recovery time for the animal. Available in three point lengths—4 mm, 5 mm, and 5.5 mm—it accommodates different animal sizes and required blood volumes.

• 3 mm: 1–2 drops (mice only)
• 4 mm: mice under 2 months
• 5 mm: mice 2–6 months
• 5.5 mm: mice over 6 months; also suitable for rats depending on age and size

For rats:

• 5.5–6 mm: under 3 months
• 6–7 mm: 3–4 months
• 7–8 mm: over 5 months

Unanesthetized rats can be manually restrained for saphenous vein sampling. The rear leg is isolated, hair is removed over the vessel, and a small amount of topical ointment (such as Puralube) can be applied to help localize the blood drop. The lancet is then used to puncture the vein, typically yielding approximately 4–5 drops (~100 µL) of whole blood for collection prior to analysis. Hemostasis can be quickly achieved by applying brief pressure to the site.
