The ALZET® product is a miniature, implantable
osmotic pump used for experimental
research in mice, rats and other laboratory animals. ALZET® pumps
continuously deliver drugs, hormones and other test agents at
controlled rates from one day to four weeks without the need for
external connections, frequent handling or repeated dosing. These
infusion pumps can be used for systemic administration. They also
can be attached to a catheter for intravenous, intracerebral, or
intra-arterial infusion or for targeted delivery, in which the
effects of a drug or test agent are localized in a particular tissue
or organ. These pumps are not approved for use in humans, nor are
they intended for such use. To meet different research needs,
ALZET®
osmotic pumps are available in a variety of sizes, pumping rates,
and durations.
Release Rates
Shown below, a total of twelve
different pump models are available in three sizes (corresponding to
reservoir volumes of 100 µL, 200 µL and 2 mL) with delivery rates
between 0.15 µL/hr and 10 µL/hr and durations between one day to
four weeks.
|

|
The 100 µL and 200 µL sizes are
intended for work in mice and white rats; the 2 mL pumps are optimal
for work in rats and larger animals.

|
|
Each lot of
ALZET® pumps is tested to determine the exact pumping rate and
reservoir volume and to ensure accurate compound delivery. These
data are provided with each order. An example of the release rate
profile of ALZET® pumps is shown above.
While the pumping rate of each
model is fixed at manufacture, the dose of agent delivered can be
adjusted by varying the concentration of agent with which each pump
is filled. Provided that the animal is of sufficient size, multiple
pumps may be implanted simultaneously to achieve higher delivery
rates than are attainable with a single pump. For more prolonged
delivery, pumps may be serially implanted with no ill effects.

The Filling Tube
is a blunt-tipped needle that is
cut to the appropriate length depending on the size of the pump. It
has a hub for attaching to a syringe.
The Flow Moderator
is used with each ALZET pump. It
is comprised of a stainless steel tube with a plastic cap and/or
flange on one end, depending on the pump model. Its purpose is
twofold. The stainless steel tube provides capillary action, which
prevents the test solution from leaking out of the pump reservoir.
The steel tube also provides a means for attaching a catheter to all
models of ALZET pump.
